After
the tsunami
|

release
of My
Friend, the Sea
on 6th May 2005

Hands
and hearts reached out across turbulent seas . . .
Tulika's book about the tsunami and its aftermath was released at Max
Mueller Bhavan, Chennai. Published simultaneously in Tamil and English as Kadalum
Naanum and
My Friend the Sea, it
was generously supported by the students of Mittelschule Pegau, a school in
the small town of Pegau, Germany. |

The
funding was warmly facilitated by Mr
Erwin Wendland,
German Consul in Chennai (left of pic) who was presented the first
copy of the book. Pegau, he said, was one of the less affluent towns
in Germany. But still the children collected € 1000 to help those
who were affected by the tragedy.
Ms Andal
Damodaran (right
of pic), Honorary General Secretary, Indian Council for Child Welfare,
Tamilnadu, released the book. Commenting on the Tamil translation, she
said it felt as if the boy were sitting beside her, playing with the
sand and telling her the story. |

The
launch was attended by educationists and aid workers, and other concerned
individuals who saw the announcement in the newspapers and wished to
attend. Almost everyone had a story or experience to share about the
tsunami, and particularly. about the resilience of children in the face of
catastrophe. A reading in English (by Sandhya Rao, the author) and Tamil (by
Subhashree Desikan, the translator) sparked off a lively tangential
discussion on the nature of translations!
