Bijoy And The Big River (English)

Author : Meera Sriram & Praba Ram
Illustrator : Koel Basu

This river jumps out of a horse’s mouth, all set for adventure! Piercing through forbidding mountain ranges, he races down from Tibet through northeastern India. Changing form and name as he rushes along, this mighty ‘son of Brahma’ connects an incredible mix of people, places and ways of life. A set of four books that flow down with some of India’s important rivers, from source to sea, to glimpse life along the way. A hands-on way for young children to understand and explore ‘information’, this series keeps them engaged as they colour in the line drawings and absorb the visual details.

Captivating images

The book shows the readers a very interesting yet largely unknown part of India- the Northeast, specifically the state of Assam. This picture book does everything right to capture a child’s attentions. Starting with captivating images to interesting tidbits about a new culture and land, Bijoy’s book is an exciting read. Although the authors recommend the book for school age children, parents can easily paraphrase for younger children. Kids Play Box

Beautifully illustrated

The story is both fun for children to follow along since it has elements kids will love—worms, dolphins, boats, a rhino—but it is also educational. As the story unfolds, notes in the margins tell us fun facts about the river and region, which are very helpful to understanding the past and present of the village and culture. Beautifully illustrated with actual photographs, the pictures allow us to better understand the setting, including boats on a calm river, women spinning silk and close-up shots of the silkworm and cocoon...
