Gender Talk Big Hero Size Zero (English)

Author : Anusha Hariharan, Sowmya Rajendran
Illustrator : Niveditha Subramaniam

Aren’t sex and gender the same thing? Either male or female, right? Of course men and women are equal – but who calls the shots at home? Does what you wear ‘invite trouble’? Do women need to be ‘controlled for their own good’? Why is being different from the majority such a problem? With gender issues hitting news hotspots, there are more and more questions but answers are shrouded in stereotype and convention. This book ‘talks' directly to teens on all aspects of gender, lifting confusions and creating awareness. Alongside is a visual commentary that prods and provokes, even as it makes you laugh.

Fun to read

The illustrations in the book make a lot of sense in a not so serious way and makes the book fun to read. They have been done interestingly and at the same time without moving away from the concepts that the book is easily readable, unlike a textbook, in spite of dealing with dry and sometimes not so easy topics. I liked them a lot. I would recommend this book to all my friends and in fact, make them read it... Saralya P Narayanan

Sterling job by the authors!

Some of the themes tackled by this volume are complex, but the authors do a sterling job of keeping the tone light without talking down... What could have been a horrific mishmash of information has been adroitly broken down into digestible chunks by the authors Anusha Hariharan and Sowmya Rajendran. The everyday examples and references to popular culture and news makes it a book that youngsters ought to be able to relate to easily. Goodbooks.in
