Interning at Tulika is an enriching learning experience in a comfortable and challenging work environment. Over the last 15 years, we have had the pleasure of working closely with some 27 young people from institutions as diverse as NID - Ahmedabad, Srishti - Bengaluru, IDC - Mumbai, MSU - Vadodara, Symbiosis - Pune, Stella Maris - Chennai, JNU - New Delhi, and interested individuals from India and abroad.
The internships could be in any of the following areas:
- Book illustration
- Book design
- Book packaging design
- Promotional material design
- Book-based product design
- Design of book apps and games
- Web design – mini interactive sites and games
- Documenting / writing assignments
- Marketing
The internships can be of two kinds:
Long term - Four to six-month pre-diploma/diploma project which is the requirement of the design schools and a normal part of course work. This usually requires the intern to come to Chennai and work from the Tulika office. However diploma projects can be done long distance if there is a suitable project.
Short term - Two month summer projects which is either part of the course work (industrial training) or done independently. This can be done in Chennai or long distance depending on the project.
The internships could be longer or shorter depending on the nature of the project and the time the intern is willing to allocate to it. In a publishing house like Tulika which has such diverse areas of work the internship opportunities can be as varied. All interns are closely and carefully mentored from start to finish, whether they are working in the Tulika office in Chennai or working from another city, interns will receive a fixed monthly stipend and should be seen as something they are paid for while still learning the work and getting trained on the job. The stipend covers a basic minimum boarding and lodging cost. While Tulika will be happy to give leads regarding accommodation, interns will have to fix and finalise places to stay on their own.
Books done by interns are, Under the Banyan (first four books), Busy Busy Grand-Ant, Vyasa’s Mahabharata, Who Am I?, Radha Finds the Circle, Basava and the Dots of Fire, Up Down, The Why-Why Girl
REQUIREMENTS
A passion and deep interest in children’s books. An internship in an independent publishing house is quite different from working in a corporate business house, advertising agency or design studio. It is smaller in business terms because of the nature of publishing and multilingual publishing like Tulika’s in particular. The work is challenging and intensive but with a lot of freedom to innovate. Being a small organisation the opportunities for dialogue and discussion are greater. Please be clear about why you are making the choice and the kind of experience you are looking for before you apply. It will help if you browse the website and look at Tulika’s books at bookshops before taking the decision to intern with us.
