ACROSS BORDERS

Deux Amis, the French edition of Nina Sabnani's Mukand and Riaz, was launched by Syros at the Paris Book fair (Salon du Livre, more properly) on 18th-19th March. This simple, endearing story of two friends dealing with Partition has also been published in Pakistan by OUP.

At a special evening at the Bologna book fair,
Deepa Balsavar's bilingual book,
The Seed was conferred the honour of being included in the prestigious White Raven's Catalogue 2007.

This One's Different

Well known writer-illustrator-cartoonist, Manjula Padmanabhan, came up with an inspired concept for one of Tulika's latest books called, well, I Am Different. This multilingual book carries the same line in 16 different languages from around the world, with pronunciation guides: 'Can you find me?' Find what? The one visual in each frame that is, well, different. Fascinating for adults and children alike, the book has also been published in Germany by S. Fischer Verlag.

PRESIDENTIAL NOD

When she isn't out under the blazing sun, digging and collecting objects from about a million years ago, archaeologist Shanti Pappu likes to work with children.
So it is that she wrote The Shining Stones, an unusual book that smoothly juxtaposes on-site archaeological facts and processes with the fictional story of a little girl working at digs in Tamilnadu — a combination that fitted neatly into Tulika's Fact and Fiction series. The book even caught the then President Dr. Kalam's attention.
A typewritten note from Rashtrapati Bhavan said,
"I especially liked the beautiful concept in spreading interest in archaeology," — and the President added in his own handwriting, "to the young."

Solving Problems

T. V. Padma loves both words and numbers. When the time came for college she chose numbers. But Mathematwist: number tales from around the world, her newest in Tulika's Fact and Fiction series, brings her back to a happy mean. She conjures up a world where numbers and mathematical concepts unravel in stories, folktales and anecdotes. So whether it's Dividing a Goose, Rounding up Camels or Gourmet Roulette, children at the math level of classes 6, 7 and 8 will have fun with words and numbers as well.
