Honoured!

Tulika's Radhika Menon was awarded the AWIC Honour 2007, recognising ‘the impressive and
significant contribution’ made by Tulika as a publisher of children’s books. The award was given by
the Association of Writers and Illustrators for Children (AWIC/ Indian BBY) during the international
conference on storytelling to promote peace, cultural integration and the reading habit.

Making waves in god's own country

Children in Kerala can now experience the magic of words and pictures through Tulika’s books. Kerala State Institute of Children’s Literature (KSICL) has published twenty-five of them.

Rubin D’Cruz, director, KSICL, is excited that the initiative will set a new benchmark for children’s books in Malayalam in the quality of production, design, and content that is  imaginative, vibrant, nuanced, challenging. This association ties in perfectly with Tulika’s commitment to publish many voices in many languages for as many children as possible.

New!

Two bilingual books. Best Friends, written and illustrated by Nina Sabnani, is a sensitive story
about friendship – between Tamanna, a little girl, and Kuchi, a tree. Rangoli, by Anuradha Ananth,
with Shailja Jain’s intricate pictures, captures a child’s curiosity about the quiet dance of dots and
lines on wet earth.

Authors and illustrators participated in a unique
Indo-Swedish collaboration on children’s books
at the Chalston Beach Resort (November 13-19)
in Calungate, Goa. This interaction was coordinated by Swedish writers Eva Swedenmark and Helen Rundgren, Tulika's Sandhya Rao and writer Paro Anand.

A two-day seminar preceding the workshop, saw lively interventions from all participants. Invited speakers, including Manjula Padmanabhan, author of Tulika's I am Different, Jan Hansson, Director, Swedish Institute, and others, touched matters close to their and other hearts.
Then, at a public performance in the fabulous Kala Academy open air gallery along the Mandovi river front, there were stories and activities galore...an evening for Goans big and small to remember. Participants, too, went home with all their bags full.

The long and the short of it...

There’s a nip in the air. It’s the season to celebrate new beginnings – and the arrival of a new wordbird
at Tulika! Wordbird books feature traditional and contemporary stories that highlight the similarities and differences in our world. Little birds perch on the pages to explain unfamiliar words and ideas, so children have access to a multicultural vocabulary.
Ismat’s Eid, in this series, is a delightful retelling of a Turkish tale by Fawzia Gilani-Williams. It comes just in time, for it brings with it the festive spirit...

Eid is round the corner and the very affable Ismat has
made purchases for the entire family, and himself. But
his new pajamas are too long! His wardrobe woes and
the warmth of family are at the heart of a story with
a dash of philosophy that is disarmingly simple.
