SUPPLEMENTARY READERS FOR HISTORY / CIVICS / CLASSROOM PROJECTS

MY VOTE COUNTS
Classes VIII, IX, X

This is the first book in In Focus, a series which spotlights current topics and trends and aims to equip students with a broad-based understanding of key issues of the day. Information, statistics, examples and case studies help analyse them with a balanced perspective.

My Vote Counts looks at India's stature as the largest democracy in the world. What does this mean? What rights and privileges do citizens of a democracy enjoy, and what responsibilities go along with it? Starting with a brief history of democracy, the book goes on to examine the election process, offers glimpses into attitudes in other parts of the world, explains terms commonly used but not often understood, supplies statistics, traces the development of political parties in India, comments on the Indian Constitution, the working of the government and a lot more. This fund of information is delivered with a light touch, cheeky cartoons and an easy read style. A valuable supplement to Civics texts and useful for projects, essays, debates, discussions and general knowledge.

"
Here's one for kids who find Indian democracy a little trying, especially to understand. . . a very reader-friendly book with easy-on-the-eye illustrations. The information and the style are very easy to understand, just perfect if you're trying to get the hang of democracy."

THE FORBIDDEN TEMPLE stories from the past
Classes V-VIII

"As a child, I often wondered what everyday life was like for people who lived long ago. I had a number of questions that my teachers could not answer . . ." muses the author in the preface. So she decided to make things easier for teachers! The book is a set of 10 fictional stories about children in various points of Indian history, but based solidly on available facts – the research bibliography is indeed very extensive. Little snippets alongside add further to information without intruding into the enjoyment of the story. And to make things more interactive, so the history sinks indelibly into the child, the book ends with an activity section very visually conceived to make it fun.

FREEDOM STORIES
Classes III-V

The set of four books (purchasable individually) introduce children to characters and episodes in India's freedom movement – Tipu Sultan, Rani of Jhansi, Mahatma Gandhi and his famous Dandi March, and finally, to the dawn of independence seen through the eyes of children in different parts of India. The text sifts out interesting details from historical research and weaves them together to read like stories.
The illustrations are bold line-drawings in black and white to be coloured in by children as they absorb history.

the reviews
"The books (Line and Circle and Ka Se Kapde Kaise), with their special emphasis on observation and the visual experience, are refreshingly different from formal educational tools, which often overlook the role of the visual in the learning process."
