Mara And The Clay Cows (English)

Author : Parismita Singh
Illustrator : Parismita Singh

Mara, the boy with unique powers, rescues the special Chanva bird, and is set on the trail of the holder of a thousand spells, the elusive Chief Magician. He journeys to the sky kingdom of the North with his cheeky talking cows and his fearless new friend Shiroi, and everything is put to the test – from his fear of flying to his cooking skills! Magic meets mystery in this gripping graphic novel inspired by a Tangkhul Naga folktale, in which otherworldly hills and valleys have a quiet but strong presence rendered by striking colour pencil art.

Dynamic and original

Mara… moves along at a brisk pace, and is easily read in a single sitting. The panels in which the illustrations are set are played with in innovative ways, making the first half of the book very dynamic – tight insets, artwork occasionally seeping to the corners of the page, and lovingly depicting the region’s hilly terrain. The book is driven almost entirely by dialogue, and I enjoyed the way subtle shades to a character are revealed entirely through the banter between its human and magical characters. Saffron Tree
